Write What You Want to Write When You Want to

I read this great post yesterday at Men with Pens. I love that blog. If you like to write, want to write, want to learn more about writing or just love to read about writing.  That’s the place to go.

Anyway. The particular post I read was about voice. We all have one whether we realize it or not and at this particular moment you are experiencing mine.  The author of the blog post talked about the process of reading and how in our minds we hear the author’s voice.  He even gave it a cool label.  He called it “sub-vocalization”

I also read a post where he talked about writer’s block. He said he realized that he had writer’s block because he was trying to write instead of just writing. I can relate.

Some Scattered Thoughts………

I’ve been learning the ropes of freelance writing. Like anything, if you want to be financially successful at it, chances are you’re going to have to do a few things that are not necessarily artistically satisfying, but pay the bills. I think it’s the eternal struggle with creative people. Because, somehow, most of us think that art and creativity are mutually exclusive with making money.

That’s because most artists and creative people are by nature very rebellious people. Not in an obnoxious way (unless you’re Sean Penn), but there is something in most artists that compels them to walk against the tide. Here in our capitalistic, money-driven society that would mean rejecting materialism and other money making ventures. Personally, I think it’s a phase.

Bonnie Raitt wrote a song about it in the 70′s.  “What is Success? Is it doing your own thing?  Or to join the rest?”

End of Scattered Thoughts…….

Anyway. So, back to the blog post. The author said to be successful at writing and to keep writer’s block from paralyzing you, you have to write for you. Write as if no one else will ever read what you have written. I’m cool with that. I’m usually pretty happy to write most everyday for hours at a time. I’m not happy if I am aware of some big bad eyes on the other side of those words who might be evaluating me and my writing skills.  Hence, writer’s block.  Cause, “oh no, some body’s watching”

I hate that. You have no idea.

I haven’t written much on this blog. But, I think about you dear blog, every day. This is one of those ventures that if I stay at can bring me a huge amount of personal satisfaction. Opening up one’s heart and soul, especially on paper is one of the most gratifying things I can think of doing.  That and eating Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Holy cow.  That’s good stuff.

So, listen, rather than prattle on about this and that.  I’ll link to the post here and here. If you love to write, want to write or whatever……..read the posts.

It’s no secret to those who know me that I’m highly distracted.  This can manifest itself in a variety of ways.  Not the least of which is chaos in my physical environment and high levels of stress at not being able to get much done during the day. Back in the BC years (before children) [...]

In my efforts to build a writing career, I have looked into writing classes, seminars, books, books and more books and have signed up for RSS feeds to multiple writing blogs. I ran across the Long Ridge Writer’s Group about a year ago or so and began to look into them.  I read many forums [...]

I’ve come to the conclusion that 2010 is my year.  You’ve heard of the Chinese New Year?  The Year of the Dragon?  The Year of the Dog?  Well, my New Year is going to be the year of being fearless. As it turns out though, 2010 is the Chinese New Year of the tiger – [...]

Well, as you can see (hopefully) I’ve been doing a little cleaning up around here since I managed to blow this blog and another several months back.  In my frustration I let it sit here, mess and all, until I felt I had the frame of mind and motivation to put it back together. So, [...]

I’m Not Here – I’m Just a Fig Newton of Your Imagination

It seems I have a psychological war going on.  It goes like this: As long as I feel like I’m writing for others, like you out there in blog-o land, I stall.  I freeze.  I clam up. (That’s all I can think of right now). I guess it’s a form of performance anxiety.  Knowing you [...]

I ordered yet another book on writing. I can’t seem to stop myself.  It’s another by Ralph Keyes, The Writer’s Book of Hope: Getting from Frustration to Publication When it arrives, it will likely find its way to my stack of “to be read” books. Or maybe I’ll dive right in and read it from cover [...]

Snow Waaaay! Yes, way!

It’s been snowing for several days in the faux Midwest. I say faux, because people actually think that Ohio is the Midwest. I hate to be the one that bears bad news, but Ohio is not the Midwest. I’ve lived in the Midwest.  My husband is from the upper Midwest.  This is not the Midwest. [...]

Jell-O? Anybody home?

Shopping. Simply mention the word and women everywhere rise like a phoenix from the ashes. It’s true.  Retail therapy has done more to raise the collective consciousness and improve the self-esteem of modern women, than Oprah, Dr. Phil and Dr. Drew combined. I mean, let’s face it, who needs Prozac when there are credit cards, debit [...]
